The Adelaide Study Abroad program is a 10-week trip to Adelaide, South Australia, offering Jissen students an immersive experience of high school life in Australia. Participants attend classes with local Australian students and international peers from various countries while living with a host family. This arrangement fosters cultural exchange and allows students to learn through everyday interactions. They are also encouraged to join after-school activities and may enjoy weekend trips with their host families or new friends. Overall, the program provides a condensed yet comprehensive experience, giving students the chance to enhance their English skills, boost motivation, test their communication abilities in real-life settings, increase international awareness, and—most importantly—develop independence, initiative, and decision-making skills.
This year, 9 students arrived in Adelaide on July 14 and returned home on September 30. The first week was designed to help them adjust to their new environment at their own pace. During this period, students explored the city’s attractions, attended ESL classes to prepare for active participation in local high school lessons, and practiced communicating with their host families and friends. Activities included English lessons, navigating public transportation, visiting local landmarks, shopping malls, museums, beaches, and the central market. A highlight of the week was a special invitation from the Governor of South Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, to visit Government House for a tea meeting and a tour. This unique opportunity allowed students to engage with Australian government officials, and Her Excellency’s warm welcome left a memorable impression.
The first week concluded with an orientation at each student’s assigned school, marking the beginning of their study abroad journey. From this point on, students attended classes alongside their Australian peers, stepping out of their comfort zones and relying on their own initiative. I am pleased to report that all our students successfully made friends and actively engaged in their learning experiences. This phase of the program is the most valuable, as students grow in independence and confidence. Over the subsequent 9 weeks, they navigated daily life, honing their interpersonal communication and English skills, building relationships, and gaining invaluable life lessons. Overall, the trip was an enriching experience for everyone involved.
